Part of our Mythic Isle Collection, this herbaceous floral print is inspired by the Island of the Lotus Eaters in Homer’s The Odyssey.

Odysseus and his men—after enduring nine grueling days of stormy sea (thanks to Zeus)—find themselves on strange shores populated by an unusual people; the island’s inhabitants are “lotus-eaters,” completely beholden to the temptingly succulent fruit of the lotus plant. Several of Odysseus’ men partake in the floral offerings, not realizing the plant holds a dream-like effect over any who consume it. His men are soon overcome, and laze about in a lotus-induced haze, perfectly happy to watch time slide by without dealing with the rigors of work or stress.

Through the years, Ancient Greek historians sought to locate this mythical island (off the coast of Libya? Or perhaps Tunisia?), as well as identify the curious lotus “fruit” (could it be persimmon, nettle, or water lily?). Unsurprisingly, no proof has been found supporting the existence of man’s first accidental—and somewhat forced—vacation isle…but we can take a lesson from its story: eat the lotuses, smell the roses, unplug, and check out every once in a while.
