Flat Vernacular is a Brooklyn‑based design studio founded in 2010 by artist couple Payton Cosell Turner and Brian Kaspr, blending their fine art backgrounds into original wallpaper, fabric, and art. Their aesthetic weaves together classical motifs and contemporary playfulness — from painterly grasses and florals to quirky animal prints — all rooted in a visual language that feels deeply personal yet universally charming. Turner describes their designs as “a form of narrative,” creating each piece from sketches, painting, sculpture, or photography, and choosing patterns that resonate intuitively rather than by strict formula. 

Sustainability and craftsmanship are core to their process: their wallcoverings are printed in‑house using heavy metal‑free, PVC‑free, recycled substrates and low‑ to no‑VOC latex inks, while their fabrics are woven from flax in an eco-conscious, Oeko‑Tex certified facility. Their design philosophy centers on making meaningful, lasting work — each piece goes through three quality checks (at raw material arrival, post-print, and pre-shipment) to ensure exceptional execution. In their collections, themes like forgotten weeds, resilient wildflowers, and feminist history merge with design, offering wallpaper that’s not just decorative but deeply considered.
