Katie's great-great-grandmother, an issue of the civilized Victorian era, is not remembered as a rabble-rouser. She was a kind and temperate woman, which makes this story about her particularly delightful.
It was the turn of the century and Cuba was a newly minted independent state, free of Spanish colonial rule after 400 years. My great-great-grandmother, still a young woman, was celebrating a theatrical performance in which she appeared on stage in a dress made of the full Cuban flag.
At the show’s reception, several Spanish soldiers were in attendance. Seizing her opportunity, she climbed on top of a table, hoisted herself onto the back of one of the Iberian fellows, and proclaimed to the room: “Today the flag of Cuba flies over Spain!”
I’ve always been tickled by this snippet of family lore. Petticoat Palm was made in memory of her, and all the dynamic Cuban women from my past and present. They are nothing if not strong, vibrant, and incredibly accomplished at making a point.
