PRODUCT INFO
When Napoleon Bonaparte looked upon Saint Helena from his approaching ship, he knew this would be the first and only occasion he would see the island from the vantage of open sea. He was heading toward his final exile; not to America, as he had hoped, but to a remote isle 1200 miles off the coast of Western Africa. The rest of his days would be spent under arrest in Longwood House, a damp, creaking country residence that would keep him safe from escape, but not from the fierce winds, marauding rats, and—wallpaper?
Since his passing, rumors that Napoleon was poisoned have persisted. And while many believe he was murdered by the English, some are persuaded that his wallpaper—printed with arsenic-laden inks—was what eventually caused his passing. Deathly vapors could easily have exacerbated his already deteriorating health, but would they have been enough to kill?
There’s no conclusive answer, though a combination of lifelong exposure to dangerous chemicals and poisons such as arsenic (which were commonly found in medicines, cleaners, makeup, and dyes), as well as stomach cancer likely contributed to his passing.
Our Saint Helena pattern is inspired by the flora of Napoleon’s island exile, and the pigments used in his dangerously beautiful wallpaper.
